Do you think Bihar has a potential in Information Technology sector?

The Indian Information Technology sector involves developing softwares. This development is not confined to just Bangalore and Hyderabad but several other cities of India such as Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Calcutta, Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Vadodara, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, Goa, Chandigarh and Trivandrum. The successes of these cities are due to its state government by promoting and providing infrastructure. Nearly all of the state governments are positive about the IT issue as a major source of employment of its people and a major cash generator for their respective states. One of the reasons of Bangalore’s success lies in its education sector for example it has the largest number of engineering colleges in the world and research/development companies.

Unfortunately the Bihar government has never been serious about this issue. Bihar’s left with little industry after its bifurcation. One possible way for Bihar to survive economically is to develop service based sectors along with agriculture based industries such as Agrochemicals etc. Though Bihar has an IT Association (BITA) but for the last 10 years it has been largely non-existent. Recently an IT ministry has also been set up although its activities remain unknown. Although IT professionals and academicians in the state are in plenty nothing is being done about it.

The members of the association are now considering doing something about the poor debacle of the IT situation in Bihar. Members based in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya and Sasaram had a meeting on the 23rd Septermber 2007.

If Bihar is to develop the state as an IT hub and an IT zone, the Bihar government has to realise and pump money into it. The Bihar government has taken the right step in giving the go ahead of a trade fair by the end of the year. Furthermore, two IT development parks have been announced to be set up.

Biharis are already providing man power to IT sector in India. Its time to set one in Bihar.
